Does shorter copy increase fee coverage?

Hypothesis

This experiment tested whether shortening the GiftAssist prompt from “Add a little extra to help with fees ($X)" to “Cover fees ($X)” encouraged more donors to opt in without reducing completed donations or average gift size.

Duration

7 days

Timing

July 29–August 5, 2026

Audience

Organizations using eligible Standard Donation Forms—including text-to-donate—with GiftAssist enabled and the default, non-customized fee-coverage prompt.

Group split

Donors were split evenly: half saw the current prompt, and half saw the shorter “Cover fees ($X)” version. All other form elements were unchanged.

What this means for you

Keep fee-coverage copy short. 'Cover fees ($X)' beat longer, more explanatory wording, so Bloomerang's making it the new default, and it's worth matching anywhere you've written your own version.

Key results

With the shorter prompt, 70.0% of donors covered fees, compared with 64.0% for the current copy—a 9.53% relative increase. Donation completion rose slightly, while average gift size remained steady.

Segment insights

The experiment included nonprofits across eligible Standard Donation Forms using GiftAssist’s standard prompt. Forms with customized copy and other excluded giving flows weren’t part of the test.

Conclusion

The shorter, more direct prompt increased fee coverage and donation completion without meaningfully changing gift size, making it the stronger-performing variation in this experiment.
