Bloomerang ethical AI statement

At Bloomerang, our mission is simple: to help nonprofits raise more and do more good.

As we continue to innovate, we see artificial intelligence not as a replacement for human compassion, but as a powerful tool that can free fundraisers to focus more on relationships and impact.

We believe AI can, and must, be built responsibly. That’s why we are committed to ensuring that every Bloomerang AI capability, including Penny, our AI Fundraising Assistant, is ethical, fair, trustworthy, and transparent.

Our Principles

1. Privacy, Security, and Data Protection

Trust is the foundation of every nonprofit relationship and it’s the foundation of ours. Bloomerang’s AI systems use customer and constituent data responsibly, securely, and only for the purposes our customers intend.

We process data within Bloomerang’s secure environment and, when external AI providers are used, only transmit data through encrypted, access-controlled connections. These providers operate under equal or greater security and compliance standards than our own.

No customer data is ever used for model training, stored outside approved systems, or shared for any purpose beyond delivering the requested AI functionality.

Data is never sold or shared for external use. We follow industry-leading privacy and security standards and align with regulatory frameworks.

2. Human Oversight

Humans remain in control of all AI-powered decisions. Penny offers recommendations and guidance, but fundraisers always make the final call. We intentionally design AI interactions that encourage review, refinement, and reflection, ensuring that people, not algorithms, guide the experience of supporters.

The AI systems will not automatically change or overwrite customer data. A human will always be asked to confirm data updates before they’re made.

3. Human-Centered Design

AI should empower, not replace, people. Every Bloomerang feature is designed to support fundraisers, helping them save time, make smarter decisions, and strengthen relationships. We see AI as a teammate that augments human expertise, not a system that automates empathy.

4. Fairness and Equity

Bloomerang actively works to minimize bias in the data and models that power our AI. We conduct ongoing reviews to identify unintended patterns that could affect fairness or inclusivity. Our systems are built with equity in mind, ensuring that AI supports all organizations and constituents without preference or prejudice.

We never use data in ways that could disadvantage individuals or communities, and we are committed to aligning AI outputs with the values of the nonprofit sector of compassion, generosity, and trust.

5. Transparency and Explainability

We believe trust is earned through clarity. Bloomerang communicates AI outputs in a transparent way, explaining how recommendations are generated and what data informs them.

When AI contributes to an insight or recommendation, we tell you, and we make it easy to understand the reasoning behind it. Fundraisers should always feel confident knowing why an action is being suggested.

6. Transparency in Training and Data Use

We train and fine-tune our AI models using responsibly sourced, anonymized, and aggregated data. We do not use individual customer or constituent data for model training without explicit consent. This approach ensures that Penny learns from patterns that reflect ethical best practices, not private or sensitive information.

Our internal data governance processes include human review, bias testing, and continuous documentation of how data is used, because responsible AI requires accountability at every step.

7. Built-In Guardrails

We don’t just rely on policy, we build our ethics directly into the technology.

Bloomerang designs and implements guardrails within every AI product to ensure these principles are upheld automatically. These safeguards prevent misuse, reduce bias, flag unusual or high-risk outputs, and keep users firmly in control.

Our goal is for ethical behavior to be baked in, not bolted on.

8. Continuous Learning and Responsibility

AI is evolving quickly and so are we. Bloomerang maintains active governance practices to monitor, test, and refine our AI systems to ensure ongoing alignment with our ethical standards.

We evaluate both the technology and its outcomes, so that AI remains a force for good in the fundraising ecosystem. We’re transparent when we make changes and invite open dialogue about how our tools evolve.

9. Customer Partnership

We view our customers as co-creators in responsible AI. Your feedback directly shapes how Penny evolves, from how she answers questions to how she delivers insights.

By participating in early programs and sharing your experiences, you’re helping define what ethical AI looks like in the nonprofit world. We’re listening, learning, and adapting together.

10. Sector Stewardship

As a leader in nonprofit technology, Bloomerang recognizes our responsibility to help the entire sector adopt AI confidently and ethically.

We are committed to sharing best practices and learnings with nonprofits and partners to ensure that the benefits of AI are felt across the nonprofit community, not concentrated among a few.

AI should lift everyone, and we aim to set the standard for how it can be done responsibly.

Our Commitment

Ethical AI isn’t a checklist, it’s a continuous practice.

At Bloomerang, our approach to AI is guided by our core values: Simplify, Act, and Care.

  • Simplify — We use AI to make complex tasks intuitive and actionable, so fundraisers can focus on people, not processes.
  • Act — We take responsibility for how AI is built, deployed, and maintained, holding ourselves accountable for its impact.
  • Care — We design with empathy, ensuring every innovation honors the relationships at the heart of philanthropy.

Our commitment is simple:

AI you can trust — built to help humans help others.
